Lake City, IA: A Surprise Worth Taking a Chance On

Folks who went on the recent Mystery Trip were delighted with the surprise destination: Humboldt County Historical Mill Farm in Dakota City, Iowa! The weather cooperated with sunshiny skies dotted with the occasional white cloud passing by. Dakota City is located about an hour and a half northeast of Lake City, adjoining the larger community of Humboldt. The County Historical Mill Farm consists of lots to see: two large, newer, bright-red, Morton-type buildings that house extensive historical exhibits, storage areas, office space, workshops, and a large spacious meeting room; a barn; a church; a school house; a Victorian home; and several smaller outbuildings. All buildings were open and available to tour at a leisurely pace, guided by the friendly staff. Shady Oaks residents enjoyed seeing all of the exhibits. The vintage vehicles, general store display, doll houses, World War II display, and the dinosaur model were some of the favorites that generated a lot of looking, which led to questions and animated conversation amongst everyone. The site of the old mill along the stream, the blooming perennial flower beds, and the many young memorial trees that have been planted all contributed to a very enjoyable experience at the farm for the visitors. It was clearly evident that the community vision and support of this historic place in Dakota City is an asset that is treasured and will continue to grow into the future. After the wonderful tour, Shady Oaks residents, staff, and volunteers stopped at the Dairy Queen in Humboldt for lunch. Everyone enjoyed their burgers, fries, and shakes while sitting in booths next to the walls of large windows in the restaurant. This afforded an expansive view of one of the busiest highway intersections in Humboldt. The residents commented that they liked to watch all of the comings and goings of the day while they ate their meals. Between the historic farm tour and lunch out at DQ, this mystery trip turned out to be one surprise that was a winner all the way around!
