Lake City, IA: Fifties Fun

Residents and staff recently gathered together to celebrate one of the most favorite decades in recent memory: the Fifties! To start off the day, staff donned unique outfits to show off those recognizable Fifties styles. At noon everyone gathered in “Minnie’s Diner” to select their lunch choices from a 50’s themed menu: hamburger, cheeseburger, or hotdog baskets (served with fries) and chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla milkshakes. Delicious! In the afternoon a sock hop was held in the main dining room. Great tunes from the 50’s filled the air, setting the stage for some creative dancing! Songs like ‘At the Hop’ performed by Danny & the Juniors and ‘Honeycomb’ sung by Jimmie Rodgers were hard to resist and soon toes were tapping and dancers were demonstrating their moves on the dance floor, all to everyone’s amusement! Also, during the dancing, staff modeled additional 50’s clothing that was borrowed from the Village Square Theater in Lake City; the several cute, homemade poodle skirts were favorites. (Thank you to John Smith and the theater group for allowing Shady Oaks to borrow this 50’s clothing for our event!) As staff and residents danced, many folks joined in on the fun by reminiscing about the styles and pastimes of this special decade. Everyone also enjoyed sampling the 50’s snacks served: Cheese Whiz on crackers garnished with pimento, Spam and hard cheese cubes with green olives on skewers, and Gingerale/pineapple/cherry juice punch. Staff member Pam Schulte’s comments summed up the day’s events very well: “It’s wonderful to see everyone getting into the spirit, kicking up their heels, and enjoying the fun from the Fifties!”

Quality Life: We will create a living environment that radiates love, peace, spiritual contentment, dignity and safety, while encouraging personal independence.
