Lake City, IA: Celebrating Social Services

March is National Social Work month, and here at Shady Oaks we would like to take the time to acknowledge the ladies that provide Social Service to our residents on a daily basis: Amy Smith (Social Services/Admissions Coordinator) and Jenna Hanson (Social Services Assistant).

Amy and Jenna both provide a strong commitment as well as experience in long term care. Amy has served for twenty three years and Jenna for sixteen. Both began their journey in other departments and transitioned to their current positions. Amy has served as Admissions Coordinator since 2004 and Jenna was brought on board to assist Amy in 2014. They provide a strong, balanced team that interacts well with all other departments in the facility. Both feel it is essential to have strong communication skills as all departments must work together to provide the residents with the best quality of life.

A day in the Social Services office is never the same. Both agree that each day is different and adaptability is the key. Their duties range from admissions and assisting with discharges, resident assessments, assisting with applying for financial assistance, and being advocates for resident rights. It takes a balance of compassion and empathy, multitasking and strong leadership skills, as well as providing a hand to hold or a smile for a resident who is scared, sad, or alone. Both agree that the most rewarding portion of the job is being able to fulfill a need for a resident, whether it is a hug or a smile or being “family” for someone who is alone and feeling down.

A lifelong resident of Lake City, Amy and her husband Donavon, are the parents to three children: Elysia, Blayne, and Kiana. Amy enjoys spending time with her children and being outdoors.
Jenna and her husband, Michael, have one child, Rowan. Jenna enjoys spending time with her family and gardening in the spring.

Co-workers and residents alike appreciate the commitment these ladies provide to our residents, facility, and teammates on a daily basis. Both Amy and Jenna feel strongly that their dedication to advocating for the residents is the most rewarding and important part of their job. They are proud and humbled to serve as a “voice.” We thank them for their dedication, loyalty, and compassion not only during Social Work Month, but each and every day.

Excellent Teams: We will select and develop team members who radiate warmth, compassion and respect while skillfully performing their duties.
