Omaha, NE: 100 Mats and Counting!

Our value of ‘Serving’ states that our actions are driven by the commitment that we are “Family Serving Family” and our value of ‘Integrity’ includes the words honesty, fairness, compassion and “continually striving to act in a way that will make God smile at our efforts”. Our Brookestone Village family is a living, breathing example of both values.

Residents, family and team members are continuously looking for opportunities to stay connected with the community in which we live. The plastic bag mat project is just one of the many ways we support the efforts of the Open Door Mission. In addition to the mats, our Life Enrichment team gets together with residents to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches monthly to donate, and building wide we recently collected cold weather items and clothing which were donated to the organization. Community outreach allows everyone involved to work for a common purpose; to help those in need.

Everyone has spent countless hours consumed by the process (it takes 1,000 plastic bags to make one mat); flattening, cutting, tying, rolling “plarn” balls and finally crocheting the plastic bags, transforming them into mats. The mats are then donated to the Open Door Mission and passed out to the homeless who use them not only to sleep on, but also for warmth and protection from the elements. To date, our residents, families and team members have donated nearly 100 mats to the Open Door Mission!

I believe God is truly smiling at the residents, family members and team at Brookestone Village who are so willing to go the extra mile to make sure those in our community are served!

Serving-We succeed by focusing our attention and energies on anticipating and exceeding people’s expectations. Our actions are driven by a “Yes, I Can” attitude and the commitment that we are “Family Serving Family.”
