Lake City, IA: Celebrating National Nursing Home Week

“Celebrating Life’s Stories” was this year’s National Nursing Home Week theme. We kicked off the week-long celebration by inviting area businesses to Shady Oaks for a community coffee. While at our facility, community members had the opportunity to meet our new Administrator, Randy Sparks, as well as, take tours. Visitors engaged in conversation while enjoying coffee and yummy homemade cinnamon rolls provided by Donna Westcott. The afternoon continued with vocal entertainment of everyone’s favorite tunes sang by Larry Heschke.
The fun didn’t stop there! The World Class Retention Team helped crown a National Nursing Home Week King and Queen. Winners were picked at random through a drawing. Dick N. cheered and clapped as he was crowned King, and Betty M. gracefully accepted her tiara and flowers as Queen. Refreshments were served while residents and team members congratulated the newly crowned Shady Oaks Royalty.
Barrel Smoke BBQ from Templeton joined us in our parking lot on Tuesday. The community joined our residents and team members in trying out the delicious grub! The food truck served BBQ pulled pork, brisket, mac and cheese, potato salad, and beans. We certainly look forward to inviting them back sometime soon!
Residents and team members gathered in the dining room Wednesday for a “home style meal”. Warm biscuits were placed on each table with butter while team members worked on passing the meal. The menu consisted of old fashion roast beef and gravy, mashed potatoes, corn, and apple crisp. Team members had the opportunity to sit and visit with residents over the family style meal.
Wednesday afternoon we had a special presentation by marketing consultant and author, Darcy Maulsby. With her knowledge of Iowa history, her presentation consisted of reminiscing and discussing Iowa family traditions.
The events continued into Thursday with a traditional bake sale. The sweet event was extremely successful ringing in $484.50 in sales. The money raised was donated to the Vetter Foundation which benefits worldwide missions work. We had an overwhelming response of donations in baked goods, making the bake sale extra special. Pies, cookies, breads, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, homemade pizza, and even strawberry upside down cake filled four tables. Our residents even got involved in the bake sale! They worked with Life Enrichment earlier in the week to make cookie pies! The event was paired with a gift certificate raffle. That afternoon, team members and residents played a TV style game show. The game, “Who Am I”, consisted of three team members positioned in front of an audience of residents. The team members sat at a long table and had been blind folded before entering the dining room. Life Enrichment Assistant, Deb Zenor sat next to the mystery guest (shady oaks resident) and answered yes or no questions as the resident responded using only head gestures! The audience was told before they started to stay very quiet! Any laughing and noise could easily give away who the mystery resident was! Team members were quick to guess some residents while others never did guess the one! This was certainly a fun way to share life stories!
Bare Bone Trio arrived Friday to help us conclude our week long celebration! Residents always look forward to their captivating performance of classic oldies!
Thank you to everyone who participated in National Nursing Home Week and helped make this year extra special!
