Springfield, MO: Creekside Hosts Students from Springfield Sister City

Springfield, Missouri has two sister cities: Isesaki, Japan and Tlaquepaque, Mexico. Every summer, over 100 high school juniors from Isesaki visit Springfield and stay at Missouri State University. They attend baseball games, go to Wal-Mart, experience our mall, and check out Bass Pro. Last year, Missouri State contacted Creekside asking if some of the students could come for a tour of the campus and for a time of conversation with our community members. It was such a success, they asked to come back–and we said, “absolutely!” The students spent about 45 minutes learning about the campus: seeing an apartment and a duplex, along with some of our more unusual wildlife: including a turkey! Then, they met our community members in the dining room and spent an hour talking with them: asking questions about their lives, hobbies, and families. Finally, the students sang for us. Everyone left with a smile. This is a learning opportunity not only for the Japanese students, but for the community members as well–we cannot wait to see them again next year!
