Iowa Falls, IA: Sight Seeing With The Empress

Iowa Falls is blessed to be built right on the beautiful Iowa River. With its limestone cliffs and picturesque banks, the river meanders through the heart of the town and holds a lot of historic memories for our residents and staff. The best way to enjoy the river is on our river boat The Empress. Brought to Iowa Falls by the Fitz family in 1991, the Scenic City Empress is the crown jewel of the Iowa River. The Empress is a 50 passenger double-decker pontoon boat that hosts weekend public cruises as well as private cruises June through mid-October. There is seating on the open upper deck, and very comfortable seating on the first floor in big booths. Large open windows allow for the breeze to gently waft through, bringing the smells and sounds of the river and timber that surrounds the area. The captain of the cruise told historic tales about the river, and pointed out places of interest along the way. Many residents remembered jumping from the cliffs on hot summer days or playing hooky from school to cool off in the river. The Empress crew was very knowledgeable about our town’s history and who lives where now. It was a relaxing and informative afternoon on the river. From the looks on everyone’s face, the outing was a happy success!
